The Moore Family

of Jasper County, Ga

The history of this family begins with Silas MOORE who was born in Alabama ca. 1852.

According to the 1870 census there were three possible Silas' born about 1852 in Alabama.

1870 Perry County, Marion Twp., pg. 327, sheet 23 (Silas ca.1852)

In the Perry County, Alabama marriage index there was a Silas Moore who married to a Martha BILLINGSLEA in 1868 and a Wesley Moore who married to Kitty Allen also in 1868.  Wesley, Kitty and family were located in Mississippi 1880 forward.  Have not found Silas and Martha in 1880, but have found a Silas born ca. 1852 in Jefferson County, wife Minerva and children.  This Silas claims father born in TN, mother unknown.  Three other's were located in 1880 Alabama born in the years: 1827, 1873 and 1877.  Could my Silas have had a 1st wife who died before the 1870 census?

In the 1880 census of Jasper County, Georgia, Silas was found indexed as MOON. Silas is age 28 born Alabama, parents born Alabama.  The rest of the household. all born in Georgia is as follows: Ella 22, Jackson 04, Julia 02, Ebin 01, ODOM, Caroline 66. (note: Caroline was found living in Ella's parents household in 1870 Putnam County).

Interestingly enough in the 1866 Colored Population Index of Perry County, Alabama there was a Jackson MOORE.  Could this be the father of Wesley, Silas, Millie, Winnie and Emma?  He wasn't found in 1870 Perry County and my Silas' first son was named Jackson.

During the census years of 1900 and 1910 Silas claimed both his parents born in Georgia and there was not another mention from any found children's households about Alabama until the 1930 census.  Daughter Julia Clara (MOORE) GRIGGS claimed her father was born in Alabama.

Silas and Ella had all together 12 children (according to the 1900 Census) with 10 surviving:

1. Jackson b. 1875-76  married Carrie Bell HOGAN 23 August, 1898 Putnam County

2. Julia Clara b. 1877-78 married 1898 Franklin GRIGGS of Putnam County, son of Isaac and Millie GRIGGS of Putnam County.  Children:  Ella, Sallie, Pauline, Lucille (who married a HALL), Rosa Lee, Mildred and Jessie Franklin.

3. Eben Fred b. 1879 married about 1917 Luella GRANT, born April 1894 in Henry County to Amos and Mary (DORTRY) GRANT.  Children: Fred, Mary Grace and Vera. (Vera is my grandmother)

4. Sallie b. Feb. 1883

5. Silas b. Jan. 1885  married Lucy

6. Willie b. Oct. 1887 married Lizzie about 1915. Children: L-----(female), Lizzie Lu and Willie Sue.

7. Addie b. Feb. 1890

8. Ella b. May 1892

9. Matthew b. May 1895

10. James b. Mar. 1897, married  Marie about 1921. Children: Adolphus and Alice

Ella died between 1897 and 1907 where by 1807 Silas was married 2nd to an Augusta HACKNEY who brought 2 children to the marriage: Cam (female) and Emmit.  Augusta married before 1920 to Flemming BEEBEE/BEBE.

Eben, Silas (Jr.) and Willie are found in the 1917-18 WWI Draft Registrations of Jasper County.   Anyone with more information on descendants of Silas and Ella's children please contact me.  Matthew and James have not been found since 1920 census at home with Silas and his new wife.  Did they marry? Have children?
